All of the gravity separation methods are common in the sense that they all use gravity as the dominant separation force. Gravity separation is used in a wide variety of industries, and can be most simply differentiated by the characteristics of the mixture to be separated.

 

A gravity separation method by which mixtures of minerals are sorted according to density in alternate upward and downward currents of water. The final products of jigging are tailings and concentrates of the desired minerals. Occasionally, an intermediate product is isolated that consists of concretions or mechanically produced mixtures of gangue particles and the desired mineral component. In jigging separation, the sorting results from the periodic action of ascending and descending pulses of water on the bed of material being prepared, the jig bed, which rests on a jigging screen.

Mineral gravity separation is an beneficiation method of separating useful metal/nonmetal and useless ores, either a suspension, or dry granular mixture where separating the mineral ore with gravity is sufficiently practical: i.e. the elements of the mixture have different specific weight. Often other beneficiation methods are applied to make the separation faster and more efficient in ore dressing, such as flotation, coagulation and suction. The most notable advantages of the gravity separation methods are their cost effectiveness and in some cases excellent reduction. Gravity separation is an excellent unit operation as it usually has low capital and operating costs, uses few of any chemicals that might cause environmental pollution and the recent development of new equipment enhances the range of separations possible.

The gravity separator that usued in mineral processing mainly refers to the jig separator. Working principle of mineral gravity separator: It uses water as the dominant separation force of gravity separator, and sorts the mixtures according to the specific gravity (density) of useful minerals and gangue. After entering the jig separator, mixtures are treated by water and gradually come into several layers, the light minerals float up to the upper layer and heavy minerals precipitate down to the bottom layer of the sorting slots, then the minerals are discharged from the jig separator through the discharge device.
